Review: The Darkness - Permission To Land, the first album to come out of the original 5 piece band 'The Darkness' from Lowestoft Norfolk is entitled 'Permission To Land' released in 2003 blending catchy and modern lyrics with a traditional old school rock and roll sound to their music. The Album reached number 1 in the UK album charts and won the 2004 BRIT Award for best album. Songs to look out for on the album are as follows: Growing On Me: this song is one of the most popular songs off the Permissions To Land record, full of very catchy lyrics and some really good rock and roll guitar to the song, full of lots of energy and some really crazy soloing from front man 'Justin Hawkins'. The song kicks off with a really upbeat into and just builds and builds producing a very 'poppy' song but still keeping to a traditional rock sound. I Believe In A Thing Called Love: Kicks off with a really catchy intro and constantly grows from there producing a really good rhythm, the lyrics again sing about love as do most of the bands songs with lines like; 'I believe in a thing called love, just listen to the rhythm of my heart' portraying the image that love can produce music, again it blends classic rock with the commercial upbeat sound that gives off 'feel good' vibes. Love Is Only A Feeling: A real power ballard, with some amazing guitar which the sound seams to come from 'Queen' guitarist 'Brian May' and the lyrics are packed full of emotion and heart blending the music with the lyrics producing an amazing song which is possibly the best the band have ever done. Other songs to look out for: Black Shuck Givin' Up Get Your Hands Off My Woman The Darkness are for fans of old school bands such as Queen, Black Sabbath and AC/DC with a bit of a commercial twist, but certainly this album turned heads when it was first released, though lead singer 'Justin Hawkins'' voice can get very irritating after a while, the guitar certainly makes up for the bands vocals, but they do produce something different and 'unique'. Sound mix: 10/10 Likability: 6/10 Re listen value: 7/10 Rock-Reviews rating: 7/10.
