HIM - Venus Doom.
Year: 2007
Music Genre: Love Metal
Album info: Sixth album from Finnish goth rockers follows 2005's 'Dark Light'. Working once again with producer extraordinaire Tim Palmer (Robert Plant, The Mission, Ozzy Osbourne), they havepulled out all the stops to unleash what they have called their heaviest album yet, describing it as a cross between Metallica and My Bloody Valentine. Doom-influenced guitars roar while pin-up frontman Ville Valo delivers, in his dulcet croon, dark tales inspired by his battle with alcoholism. Includes the single 'The Kiss Of Dawn'. Review: HIM - Venus Doom Finnish Goth Rockers HIM are back with the a new take on metal as such, more heavyer, faster riffs and of course keeping the distinctive sound of the band itself. The album on first instance isn't as easily hooking as previous albums as it requires you to be more in the mood to listen to it and also has a more darker approach to the lyrics as the lead singer 'Villie Valo' wrote most of the songs when he was going through a recent bad patch of constantly drinking and the break up of his relationship. Songs to look out for on the album are: 'Kiss Of Dawn' the first single to be released from the new album and probably the best and most likable, its very upbeat with allot of fast guitaring and faster singing, it also is the most catchiest song off the album as on first listen you will instantly be hooked. 'Cyanide Sun' probably the only song off the album with a old school slower vibe to the song, starting off with a more mellow sound and slower lyrics, with some amazing guitaring from Mikko Lindström, a really nice gothicy sound to it really gives it a well deserved place as the last song to finish the album. 'Passions Killing Floor' starts off with a catchy riff which sounds a bit like 'Wings Of A Butterfly' the song may take a couple of listens to like it but again is a really well written song and has some brilliant guitaring and a real dark vibe to it. 'Venus Doom' the title track off the album again is a song that requires a few listens to get hooked, it starts off with 'Villie Valo' lighting up a cigarette and then kicks in to a heavy blow, then about half way has a really nice break in it which should have been more of. The album does require some listening to and isn't as appealing as previous albums but after time starts to get better, it still has the definitive sound as all HIM songs do, the songs do after time become slightly repetitive and too long but other than that a good album none the less, if your a HIM fan you should check it out as for the good songs they are brilliant but faster may not have been the right take on the album, as for the artwork which is horrible, the disk itself is just poor artwork and what happened to the 'Heartagram'?
