Year: 2007.
Music Genre: Punk Rock.
Album Info: Canadian pop-punk superstars Sum 41 return with their fifth full length album, the follow-up to 2004's 'Chuck.' The album also marks a departure of sorts, with the band moving in a more mature, politically charged direction whilst honing a tighter, more streamlined overall sound. Includes the single 'Underclass Hero. Review: Underclass Hero: The long awaited return of the infamous Pop Punk boys known as Sum 41. The album is a combination of the bands old punk material with the heavyer stuff they did in recent years and this time they got it spot on, the album sounds so much more grown up and the lyrics are more meaningful as this time allot of the songs are about Derick Whibley's father and its also this time political which in allot of songs have 'Green day' style references, allot of the songs give a very suburban feel to it like its a cult feeding transmit ions to the underclass of society. Songs to look for on the album are as follows: Underclass Hero: The opening track to the album and the bands first come back single, the song is about being a minority in society and not wanting to be like everyone else in the world, it kicks off with a really catchy riff which is very familiar to the bands previous song 'Fat Lip' just a bit faster, it's a real 'feel good' song which will get you up dancing, the song does tap on a 'Green day' reference when half way through the song he says: ''May i have your attention please, I pledge allegiance to the underclass as your hero at large.'' which any Green day fan may comment saying it sounds like they ripped the words from the song 'Holiday', which Sum 41 are big fans of Green day so its kinda cool that they respect them enough to quote in they're own words lyrics from Green day. Walking Disaster: Tells the story of a person that has ran away from home as his family is torn apart by the break up of his parents, to fend for himself, has eventually forgotten where he comes from and is on the brink of death, its a very fast past powerful lyric 'd song: ''Sorry, mom, but I don't miss you, father's no name you deserve i'm just a kid with no ambitions, wouldn't come home for the world''. The song has a real powerful feel to it and some really well written music to it and for the first time it has some 'Phaser' effects off the amps. Dear Father: This song is really the first reference that you find out that Derick Whibley doesn't actually know who or where his father is, its kinda of sung as a letter and a cry out to find his father, and find out that his father never did much for him, a good quote from the song is: ''You're out there somewhere, but i don't know if you care, at all, it seems that you don't, it's as if the day will never come, So you remain a complete unknown'' very emotional this song and its nice to see that the bands more deeper which makes the album more interesting in a whole. Ma Poubelle: Just a really random French sung song, which when translated is actually very rude, it sounds like My Chemical Romance's Bonus track 'Blood' it lasts 50secs and after a while will get stuck in your head for sure. March of The Dogs: This is really the most underground sounding song and the song kicks in with a fast pasted riff and a voice that sounds like a random radio transmition: Ladies and gentleman of the underclass the president of the United States Of America is DEAD! a loud, fast passed song full of political and controversial lyrics which really turned some heads with the press as towards the end of the song another transmition says: ''Another president dead, because they blew off his head, no more kids to be led, yes to heaven he fled, was it something he said, because of who's in his bed, by who will we be led? by whose hand will we be fed? all the lies by the lying liars who said we'll be fine, its OK, hey look mom no head''. With Me: One of the best songs off the album because its just all about the lyrics, just plain brilliant writing, very emotional, the guitaring adds to the sheer power of the song, its defiantly a lovers song and was probably written for Derick's new wife Avril Lavigne, the lyrics that stand out the most are: ''I want you to know, with everything I won't let this go. These words are my heart and soul, I hold on to this moment you know. Cause I'd bleed my heart out to show, that I won't let go''. So Long Goodbye: The last song off the album, again very powerful lyric 'd song this time played and sung by Derick Whibley, this song also has a very Green day style feel to it, as the interlude in the song has violins with the guitaring but it is a really well written song, good to sing along to and to wind down to just a pity it wasn't more Sum 41 played instead of Green day other than that a really good piece of music. And it's quite alright, and goodbye for now, just look up to the stars and believe who you are, 'Cause it's quite alright and so long goodbye. Other songs to look for on the album is the bonus track, No Apologies, Jester and Pull The Curtain. For Fans of Blink 182, Green day, Sum 41 (old School) this is a well worth album to pick up, powerful, well combined music wise with punk'y riffs and some real well written music and is more than you would have ever expected from Sum 41 which adds to how good it is.
